BFH Thesis Template

A template for Bachelor’s and Master’s theses in the BFH corporate design, based on the bfhthesis class of bfh-ci. It contains the title page, abstract, table of contents, chapters, declaration of authorship, bibliography, lists of figures/tables/listings, glossary, index and appendix, plus a chapter with examples of tables, maths, figures, code, boxes and lists.

Installation and compiling are described in the general README of the BFH LaTeX templates; this file covers only what is specific to this template.

Files and folders

Path

Purpose

bfhthesis.tex

Main document: class options, packages, title data and the order of all parts.

content/

The text, one file per part (abstract.tex, introduction.tex, …).

content/glossary.tex

Glossary entries.

content/expl_fragments.tex

Examples of LaTeX elements; delete it when you no longer need it.

figures/

Figures (PDF), e.g. plots.

pictures/

Pictures (JPEG/PNG): title picture, signatures, photos.

listings/

Source code included with \lstinputlisting.

project.bib

Bibliography database (BibTeX format).

Files in content/, figures/ and pictures/ are found by name alone: \input{introduction}, \includegraphics{placeholder}.

Getting started

  1. Check the class options at the top of bfhthesis.tex:

    • BCOR=15mm – binding correction for the printed thesis

    • twoside – two-sided layout; with openright chapters start on a right-hand page

    • bibliography=totoc, listof=totoc – bibliography and lists appear in the table of contents

    • monolingual / bilingual – see the bfh-ci manual

  2. Fill in the title data after \frontmatter: \title, \subtitle, \author (several authors separated by \and), \institution, \department, \institute, \version, \titlegraphic*, \advisor, \coadvisor, \projectpartner, \expert, \degreeprogram.

  3. Add the signatures for the declaration of authorship with \setupSignature: one entry per author, Name={<signature picture>}. \declarationOfAuthorship prints the declaration in the main language.

  4. Write the chapters in content/ and add them to bfhthesis.tex with \chapter{...} and \input{...}.

Bibliography

The thesis uses BibTeX with the unsrt style (numbered in order of citation) and the cite package; \bibliography{project} loads project.bib. Use entry types BibTeX knows, e.g. @misc with howpublished = {\url{...}} for web pages (as in knuthwebsite); biblatex types such as @online are not supported by unsrt.

Glossary and index

  • Glossary: define entries in content/glossary.tex with \newglossaryentry{<key>}{name=..., description=...} and use them in the text with \gls{<key>} or \Gls{<key>} (capitalised). \printglossary lists the used entries. The glossary is built by makeglossaries, which latexmk runs through .latexmkrc. The TeXnicCenter instructions in the preamble are only needed when you compile without latexmk.

  • Index: mark terms with \index{<term>}; \printindex prints the index. latexmk runs makeindex automatically.

Example elements

content/expl_fragments.tex shows:

  • tables with bfhTabular (with local colours via \colorlet{BFH-table}{...} and \colorlet{BFH-tablehead}{...}) and a longtable across pages

  • numbers and units with siunitx (\num, \qty)

  • equations, figures, side-by-side figures and subfigures (subcaption)

  • source code from listings/ with the BFH style style=bfh-c

  • boxes: bfhBox with a colour option, bfhAlertBox, bfhWarnBox, bfhNoteBox, bfhRecycleBox

  • lists and multi-column text (multicols)

  • index, glossary and citations

Placeholder text from \blindtext is printed in grey (redefined in the preamble) so that unfinished parts are easy to spot.

Headers, footers and translations

  • Commented code in the preamble shows how to set head/foot lines and the contents of headers and footers for even and odd pages (KOMA-Script \lehead, \rohead, …).

  • Terms on the title page such as Advisor or Expert can be changed with \redefinetranslation, e.g. for female forms in German; see the commented snippet after \begin{document}.

Languages

The main language is English; German (ngerman) and French are loaded as additional languages. For a thesis in German, use \usepackage[french,english,main=ngerman]{babel}. French changes the layout of lists (see bfh-ci issue #166); uncomment \frenchsetup{StandardLists=true} to keep the standard lists.
